Your LinkedIn URL, and why it matters
Free, changeable, and more consequential than it looks: LinkedIn is one of the sources assistants cite most when somebody asks who you are.
How do you get a custom LinkedIn URL?
A LinkedIn public profile URL is free and set in the profile settings under Edit public profile and URL. It must be 3 to 100 characters, and each one is unique and first-come. A released URL can take time to become available again. Where the exact form of your name is taken, LinkedIn does not reassign it on request; the routes are a variation, or a trademark complaint where a company name is being used confusingly.
LinkedIn is cited in roughly 14% of ChatGPT Search answers, which makes a clean, consistent profile URL part of how an assistant resolves who you are. Consistency across platforms matters more here than winning the exact string.
What is possible
- Claim any available URL instantly, free, in your own settings
- Change it later — though old links will break
- A variation where the exact form is taken: a middle initial, a location, a role
- A trademark complaint where a company URL is being used to suggest affiliation
- Company Page vanity URLs, set separately from personal profiles
