Claim an X handle through the published routes
X is the platform with the clearest rules here: a trademark policy that is actually enforced, and a stated position on inactive accounts.
How do you get a taken X (Twitter) username?
X releases handles through its trademark policy, where a rights holder reports an account using their mark in a confusing way, and through its impersonation policy. X also states that accounts inactive for a prolonged period may be removed, which frees the handle — but it does not transfer or reserve a handle for a specific requester, and it does not release usernames on request. Buying and selling accounts is prohibited by the terms of service.
X’s inactive account policy frees handles but does not assign them. When one is released it goes to whoever claims it first, which makes monitoring and timing the real work rather than the filing.
What makes a claim viable
- A registered trademark matching the handle
- The holding account trading on your identity or brand
- A clear impersonation element
- An account with no posts, no followers and no sign of a person behind it
- Documented confusion — people contacting the wrong account
How an X handle case runs
- 1
Rights assessment
Registered mark, common-law use, or nothing actionable. We tell you which.
- 2
Target review
Activity, content and whether there is a real person behind it.
- 3
File
A trademark or impersonation report with the registration and evidence of confusion.
- 4
Monitor and claim
Where the route is inactivity, we watch for the release and claim on the day. This is the part that fails if nobody is watching.
- 5
Proof
A screenshot of the handle live on your account.
The specifics
- Priced
- Per handle, success-based and held in escrow
- Published routes
- Trademark policy, impersonation policy, inactive account removal
- Typical timeline
- 2 weeks to 6 months
- Counts as delivered
- The handle is live on your account, evidenced by a screenshot
What we will not claim
- We do not take handles off people. No phishing, no social engineering of support staff, no exploiting a recovery flow, no buying an account from someone who hijacked it. Every one of those gets the handle clawed back later and the recipient account banned, which is a worse outcome than never having it.
- X does not reserve a released handle for the person who reported it. We can be fast; we cannot be guaranteed first.
- A trademark report against an active legitimate account is abuse of the process, and we will not file one.
