How to apply for Instagram legacy verification

2 hours to prepare, up to 30 days to hear backModerate

Applying is free and takes minutes. The hard part is everything before the button: whether independent sources have written about you, and whether your application gives a reviewer anything to confirm that with.

How do you apply for Instagram verification?

Open Instagram, go to Settings, then Account type and tools, then Request verification. Enter your full legal name, upload a photo of a government ID, select your category, and provide links to independent articles about you. Applications are reviewed within about 30 days. This is the free notability badge; Meta Verified is a separate paid subscription.

Have these ready

  • A government photo ID matching the name you will enter
  • Links to independent articles about you — not interviews, not press releases
  • A complete profile: photo, bio, at least one post, and a public account
  • An honest count of how many of those links a stranger would call significant coverage
  1. 1

    Test your own notability first

Search your name in an incognito window. If the first page is your own social profiles and nothing written by anyone else, you are not close, and applying now wastes the attempt without teaching you anything.

    • Count articles written about you by someone who chose to write them
    • Discount interviews — those are you talking
    • Discount anything labelled sponsored or partnered
    • Discount press releases and anything that reads like one
  2. 2

    Fix the profile before applying

Incomplete profiles are declined on sight and it has nothing to do with notability. This takes ten minutes and removes an entire category of avoidable rejection.

    • A profile photo of you or your logo
    • A bio that says who you are, with no "verification" references
    • At least one post, and ideally recent activity
    • A public account — private accounts cannot be verified
    • The same name and handle you use on other platforms
  3. 3

    Open the request form

Settings, then Account type and tools, then Request verification. On some account types it sits under Settings and privacy, then Account. It is free, and Instagram will never charge you for it.

  4. 4

Enter your name exactly as on your ID

Legal name in the legal name field, the name you are known by in the known-as field. A mismatch between the ID and the entry is a routine rejection reason.

  5. 5

Give them the links that count

You get limited space, so use it on the strongest three to five sources rather than everything you have. One national profile beats ten blog mentions, and a reviewer scanning a long weak list concludes you have nothing strong.

    • Strongest first
    • Independent publications with editorial oversight
    • No sponsored content, no press release syndication
    • A Wikipedia article or Knowledge Panel, if you have one
  6. 6

    Submit once and wait

Reviews take up to about 30 days. Reapplying immediately after a decline does nothing — you can apply again after the stated interval, but only a changed situation changes the answer.

  7. 7

If declined, work out what was missing

Instagram does not tell you why. In practice it is almost always one of three things: not enough independent coverage, a profile or name inconsistency, or an account with enforcement history. Fix the fixable ones before the next attempt.

What gets applications declined

  • Applying with no independent press coverage at all. Follower count is not a criterion and never has been.
  • A name on the application that does not match the ID.
  • An incomplete or private profile.
  • Submitting interviews and sponsored posts as evidence of notability.
  • Paying someone who promises a badge. Nobody outside Meta can grant one.
  • Reapplying repeatedly with nothing changed.

When this stops being a DIY job

If you have real coverage but have been declined, the gap is usually how the case was presented rather than whether it exists. If you have no coverage, no service can fix that with an application — the honest route is earning it first, and we will say so rather than take the fee.
