Short answer
The original verification badge granted on the basis of notability and authenticity rather than a subscription — still visible on accounts that earned it.
It signalled that a platform had confirmed the account belongs to the real, notable person or brand it claims to be.
Platforms have largely replaced new grants with paid subscriptions, but notability-based verification still exists in limited form on several of them.
Why it matters
It is the badge that still means something, precisely because it cannot be bought directly.
