Remove a Tripadvisor review with grounds
Tripadvisor runs its own fraud detection and will act on a well-evidenced dispute — but it is unusually strict about review-gating and will penalise a property that asks for help the wrong way.
How do you get a Tripadvisor review removed?
A property disputes the review through its Management Centre, citing which posting guideline it breaches — no first-hand experience, a competitor or conflict of interest, personal information, hate or threatening content, off-topic material, or content that cannot be verified. Tripadvisor also removes reviews its own fraud systems identify as fake. It does not remove reviews for being negative, and attempting to influence reviews can result in a ranking penalty on the property.
Tripadvisor penalises review-gating and incentives harder than any other platform, including a visible red badge on the listing. Nothing we do involves soliciting reviews selectively, and we will tell you if your current process is putting the property at risk.
Grounds Tripadvisor acts on
- The reviewer never stayed, ate or visited — no booking, no record
- A competitor, a former employee, or an obvious conflict of interest
- A review about a different property or a different branch
- Personal information about staff or other guests
- Hate speech, threats, or sexually explicit content
- Second-hand information — a review of what someone else reported
- Content focused on something outside the property’s control
How a Tripadvisor case runs
- 1
Assessment
Each review matched to a posting guideline, with the no-grounds ones named before you pay.
- 2
Evidence
Booking systems, POS records, door logs, CCTV timestamps — whatever shows the stay or visit did not happen, or did not happen as described.
- 3
Dispute
Filed through the Management Centre against a named guideline.
- 4
Escalation
A declined dispute goes back with the evidence restated, once. Repeat disputing without new evidence does nothing.
- 5
Proof
A screenshot of the listing without the review, and the bubble rating before and after.
The specifics
- Priced
- Per review, charged only where grounds exist
- Strongest evidence
- Booking or transaction records contradicting the stated visit
- Typical timeline
- 5 to 21 days
- Counts as delivered
- The review is gone from the public listing, evidenced by a screenshot
What we will not claim
- A genuine guest’s honest account of a bad stay is not removable, and a management response is the real answer to it.
- We will not arrange solicited or incentivised reviews. The penalty is a public badge on your listing.
- We do not post fake positive reviews to bury a real one. Every platform detects it, the penalty is worse than the review was, and a business caught doing it loses the profile rather than the review.
- The platform decides. We document the breach and escalate it; nobody outside the platform can delete a review, and anyone claiming an inside contact is lying to you.
