Remove a photo from Google Images

Image results have their own tools and their own policies, and one of them — the one for intimate imagery — is the fastest removal process Google operates.

How do you remove an image from Google Images?

An image is removed from Google Images by deleting it at the source, by a copyright takedown if you own it, or under one of Google’s own policies. Non-consensual explicit imagery is removed on an expedited track and Google will also suppress duplicates. Where the page hosting an image has already been deleted, the Remove Outdated Content tool clears the stale thumbnail.

If you took the photo, you own it, and a copyright takedown is usually faster and more reliable than any policy argument. People overlook this constantly on their own selfies and personal photographs.

Routes that work, strongest first

  • Non-consensual intimate imagery — expedited, with duplicate suppression
  • You own the copyright, typically because you took the photo
  • The image shows a minor
  • Personal information is visible in or alongside the image
  • The hosting page is already deleted and only the thumbnail remains
  • The image appears on a site that charges for removal

How an image case runs

  1. 1

    Reverse-image sweep

Every copy, not the one you found. Images propagate further than text and a single removal is rarely the end of it.

  2. 2

    Pick the route per copy

Copyright, policy, or source removal — different copies often need different arguments.

  3. 3

    File

DMCA notices where you hold the rights, policy requests where you do not, host complaints where the site is unresponsive.

  4. 4

    Duplicate suppression

For intimate imagery, Google can suppress future duplicates as well as removing known copies. That request is made explicitly.

  5. 5

    Proof and monitoring

Dated screenshots of the image search, then re-checks across the window.

What we will not claim

  • A photograph someone else took, published lawfully, with no policy breach, is not removable. We will say so rather than sell the attempt.
  • Removal at the source beats de-indexing every time: it clears every search engine at once and it cannot be undone by a recrawl. We try the source first even when de-indexing is the cheaper job for us.
  • We do not file copyright claims on images you do not own. A false DMCA notice is a legal problem for you, not for the host.
  • Google decides. We build the strongest documented request; nobody outside Google can force a result down, and anyone claiming a contact there is lying to you.
