What is Right to be forgotten?

Also called: RTBF, Right to erasure

Short answer

A right under EU and UK data protection law to have search results about you delisted when the information is inaccurate, inadequate, irrelevant or excessive.

It applies to individuals, not companies, and it delists results for searches on your name rather than removing the page.

Search engines weigh your privacy against the public interest. A public figure’s professional conduct is rarely removable; a private person’s decade-old personal matter often is.

Why it matters

Where it applies it is the strongest de-indexing route available, because the search engine is obliged to consider the request rather than merely permitted to.
