Press coverage for a startup
Everyone announces their round. Almost nobody gets written about for it, and the coverage that does appear counts for far less than founders expect.
How does a startup get press coverage?
Paid placement on named outlets is immediate and guaranteed; earned coverage requires a journalist to find the story newsworthy, which routine funding and launch announcements rarely are. Wikipedia explicitly discounts routine business announcements as evidence of notability however many outlets repeat them, so a funding story that places widely can still contribute nothing to a notability case.
A funding announcement syndicated to forty outlets is one source, not forty. Wikipedia reviewers and verification reviewers both discount it on exactly that basis, which is why founders with impressive-looking press pages are still declined.
What makes a startup story place, and what does not
- Places well: a funding round with a recognised lead investor named
- Places well: a genuine first, or a verifiable, surprising number
- Places well: a founder with an independently interesting background
- Places poorly: a launch with no traction figures
- Places poorly: a rebrand, a hire, or a new feature
- Places poorly: anything that reads as a press release with the headline changed
How a startup placement order runs
- 1
Pick the angle before the outlets
The same company has several possible stories and they do not place equally. We will tell you which one travels.
- 2
Select from the directory
Business and technology outlets with their metrics and prices visible up front.
- 3
Write it as a story
Not as an announcement. Included in the outlet price.
- 4
Submit per outlet
Each held and released separately against its own proof.
- 5
Be honest about what it bought
If you wanted notability rather than visibility, we will say that this did not deliver it.
The specifics
- Priced
- Per outlet, published in the directory
- Good for
- Visibility, credibility with customers and recruits, filling out a thin search result
- Not good for
- Wikipedia notability, or a verification dossier
- Counts as delivered
- The live article URL on the named outlet
What we will not claim
- A placed funding announcement will not make your company notable for Wikipedia. Routine business announcements are explicitly discounted.
- Genuine editorial coverage cannot be guaranteed by anybody. A journalist decides what to write, and a provider promising earned placement is either selling paid placement under a different name or lying outright.
- We will not publish traction or revenue figures we cannot verify with you first.
- Every outlet in the directory shows whether the post carries a sponsored label and whether the link is dofollow, because those two facts determine most of what a placement is worth and almost every seller obscures them.
