Paid placement vs earned coverage
These are sold as the same thing and valued completely differently by the people who matter — verification reviewers, Wikipedia editors, and increasingly the AI systems deciding what to say about you.
Is a paid press placement as good as real press coverage?
No, and they are not substitutes. A paid placement is guaranteed to run, usually carries a sponsored label, and typically has a nofollow link — so it builds visibility but counts for little with verification reviewers, Wikipedia editors or search authority. Earned editorial coverage cannot be guaranteed by anyone, but it is what establishes notability, because an independent journalist chose to write it.
Paid placement
You pay, it runs. Fast, certain, labelled, and discounted by everyone assessing notability.
Earned coverage
A journalist decides to write about you. Nobody can guarantee it, and it is the only thing that counts for notability.
Side by side
| Paid placement | Earned coverage | |
|---|---|---|
| Guaranteed to run | Yes, and refunded if it does not | No. Anyone guaranteeing it is lying to you |
| Timeline | Days to a few weeks | Months, and often nothing |
| Cost | Published per outlet, from hundreds to thousands | A retainer for the work, with no guaranteed output |
| Counts for Wikipedia notability | No. Explicitly excluded as not independent | Yes. This is the evidence the test asks for |
| Counts for platform verification | Very little. Reviewers discount labelled content | Yes. It is the main evidence of notability |
| SEO authority | Limited — usually nofollow and sponsored-labelled | Substantial, and the links are editorial |
| Control over the message | High. You largely write it | None. They write what they think |
| What it is genuinely good for | Visibility, credibility signals to customers, filling a search result | Notability, authority, and being cited by assistants |
Which to buy
If you need to be visible — a search result that looks substantial, something to point a customer at, coverage to fill out a thin presence — paid placement does that quickly and predictably, and our directory publishes what each outlet costs. If you need notability for a Wikipedia article or a verification badge, paid placement will not get you there and we will tell you so before you spend. Those are different budgets with different timelines, and conflating them is how people spend thousands and remain exactly as unverifiable as before.
Paid placement for visibility. Earned coverage for notability. They do not substitute for each other.
